Jacumba Hikers: Sombrero Peak via McCain Valley
The hike to Sombrero Peak is a long one…approximately 10 miles in and out (1548’ elevation gain/ loss). To reach the summit, where beautiful views await, requires strenuous boulder climbing. This is a physically challenging hike because of the distance and boulder climbing.
Meet at 9:00 am at Cottonwood Campground on McCain Valley Rd. To get there, from I-8 take exit 65 and follow McCain Valley Rd to Cottonwood Campground. The road to Cottonwood Campground is a slow-going, 10 mile unpaved road, so allow plenty of travel time. (There may be a Parking Fee.)
Please Note: While we do our best to accurately describe the hikes and their difficulty levels, please know your own limits and capabilities! A hike that is easy or moderate for some may be difficult or extreme for others, depending on hiking experience, skill level, and physical capabilities. Also, please be prepared! Comfortable hiking shoes with good traction, 2-3 liters of water, a hat, and a backpack (to carry your own water, snacks, emergency/First-Aid supplies, and other gear) are essential items on these challenging hikes. Hiking poles may be helpful. No dogs allowed!
