Volunteers

Volunteers are an integral part of the IVDM! in 2014 our volunteers donated over 1,200 hours to the museum to help keep us going. Whether you are interested in being a volunteer curator or giving museum tours there is an opportunity here for you! Please look at our list of volunteer opportunities for exciting options, or contact Museum staff with new ideas! Volunteers must be 16 or older.

Visitor Services

Volunteers will greet visitors, provide information about upcoming events and membership, monitor museum galleries for safety, and assist with sales at the gift shop. Volunteers learn about our exhibits, collections, and history while working in this position. Volunteers must be comfortable with computers, handling money, and be able to stand/walk for periods of time.

Docents

Docents have successfully completed the museum's docent classes and are able to conduct guided tours. The docent should have a strong desire to learn and educate others about the history of the Imperial Valley Desert Museum, Imperial County, native plants, animals, archaeology, and the native Kumeyaay cultures. Must be able to stand/walk for periods of time. Visitor Services and Docent responsibilities often overlap.

Volunteer Curator

Volunteers meet with the Head Curator in the curation lab and learn the process of curating artifacts for the museum's collection. If you've ever been interested in behind the scenes look at museums and archaeology, this would be a perfect volunteer opportunity. Volunteers must be comfortable with computers.

Museum Gift Shop

Gift shop volunteers assist visitors with purchases and keep the store stocked with inventory. Volunteers put prices on merchandise, take inventory if needed, keep gift shop organized and ascetically appealing. Volunteers must be comfortable with computers and handling money.

Special Events

Youth art programs, field trips, Stargazing, grand openings of major exhibits, and fundraising events are examples of ways volunteers help the museum at special events. Volunteers must be comfortable interacting with visitors of all ages, not be afraid of getting messy, and able to stand/walk for a period of time.

Gardening/Landscaping

Volunteers are responsible for planting, maintaining, and sometimes removing plants from the museum grounds, trails, and interpretive gardens. Trails need to be maintained, and new landscaping is always welcome.

Building Maintenance

Volunteers soon find that there is always a project going on! Volunteers who enjoy construction, painting, and cleaning are very comfortable in this position.
